Curvy

I tried sewing clothing for myself a couple of times but not since high school.  I determined way back then that quilting was more my style.  I liked sewing things flat, square and simple right angles.  Curves and 3D sewing were just was not my thing.

Well, after my bee block sewing this week...

... I think I'm ready to start tackling some clothing for myself.

What do you think?  Do you like sewing clothing or do you stick to quilts?

  1. I recently picked up some patterns on super sale at JoAnn and will be trying my first garment in YEARS.

  2. I've only sewn simple baby and little girl clothes so far but I have been thinking of trying to find and try an easy pattern for me - I'll be interested to see what you pick. I love both your blocks - that dress block is super cute - would be an awfully cute dress!

  3. I'll choose sewing a sleeve over a curved bee block any day. I find curves in clothing much much easier!
Love both your blocks but obviously I am completely biased and love the one you made for me best :D

  4. I used to sew clothing, but got frustrated with repeated fit issues. I actually think that quilting has taught me the value of good habits - it is worth it to press every seam, a true seam allowance is better than "cheating" a little bit, etc... It must be the upcoming fall season, but I have totally caught the clothing bug. I signed up for the Sassy librarian blouse class on Craftsy, and am planning on graduating to Tovas when that is complete. I hope to start tracing my muslin this afternoon,

  5. Beautiful Blocks! I haven't sewn much for myself in the way of clothing, but I love sewing clothes for my little one and I have no problem with bags and such....I do think curves are harder in quilt blocks then clothes though. I always have plans to make myself some clothes, it just always gets shoved to the back burner....

  6. These are fabulous blocks! You should definitely dip into garment sewing -- it can be very fun (and also very frustrating at times...but that's the nature of the beast, right?).

Kid clothes are fun, since their bodies are such simple little tubs and they can get away with just about anything. The Oliver + S boys clothes are super cute :)

My greatest sewing successes for myself (i.e. things I actually wear) have been simple cotton skirts: for INSTANT gratification, try the skirt pattern from Simplicity 2614 -- bias cut with an elastic waist, it works really well in quilting-weight cottons (which very few garments do, in my experience).

If you have a serger or a stretch stitch on your sewing machine, you could make some very wearable things from interlock or cotton jersey. I just made the pencil skirt from Sew U Home Stretch (from some stashed Jay McCarroll Germania interlock) and it took all of 45 minutes :) Plus I think I'll wear it, so that's a good thing!

As usual, I wish you could just come on over so we could sort through my box of patterns! Have fun.

  8. Super cute blocks - I especially love the dress block.

I sewed clothing before I started quilting, and it takes a while to find patterns that look good on you, and figure out how to adjust patterns to fit well. But once you know what you're doing, its super fun because you can totally customize things. I had a couple of simple dresses that I made in university that I literally wore until they wore out, I loved them so much.

I only make really simple, blouse-y tops and skirts right now because I've been pregnant and nursing on and off for the last eight years.

I would start with inexpensive fabric for the first few projects until you get the hang of it. OR start with kids clothes, which turn out super cute as kids are easy to fit.

  11. I haven't been able to bring myself to sew clothes since I was in high school. I keep thinking it is a good idea, but haven't tackled anything bigger than a toddler dress yet. I'll have to keep an eye on your efforts. Both of these blocks are gorgeous.

  14. I have a desire to learn to sew clothes because I have so many Unreasonable Fashion Demands that cannot possibly be met by the mass market, e.g. short-sleeved shirts that actually fit my bust but have some darts so I don't look like I'm wearing a tent (CAMP shirt, get it???), that don't have wee cap sleeves that cut across the fattest part of my arm, that don't have button tabs, ruffles down the front, or other things that are going to render them utterly out of fashion next year, etc. I'm stopped by the fact that there would be a long (perhaps infinite) period of looking like HEY GUYS LOOK I SEW MY OWN CLOTHES!!! before I was any good at it.
